"Esto Vir is Latin for ‘be a man’, and I suggest this is the central task of a man’s life. It seems obvious, doesn’t it? Yet the obvious is not always so clear. Nor is it easy.

We live in a time when, at least in the western world, there is increasing suspiciousness and distrust of boys and men. As I offer you this book, I am convinced that for the mental and spiritual welfare of men, we must know what is our calling as men.

Why has God created us as men?
What can we as men offer to the world that women cannot?
How can we serve and follow Christ as men?

It is a risky business to seek to differentiate in our post-modern and increasingly gender-neutral, gender-fluid and gender-hostile society. But it is my firm belief that only in the sexual difference do we discover our real and true humanity, which leads to our human happiness and flourishing. I invite you to read this book and hopefully to gain some help in understanding the masculine experience and vocation. I hope it also encourages many men to be pleased to be a man...to contribute to their families and communities in that distinctive and irreplaceable masculine manner. Esto Vir! Be a man!”
